A friend who works as a call center rep recently got a call from a client who was having problems with a component of her website. My friend bent over backwards trying to assist her. The woman was very frustrated and my friend totally understood it which is why he was being extra patient with her . He even approached two of his supervisors about helping the woman and after carefully looking over the situation they arrived to the same conclusion; she needed to call her internet provider nothing could be done for her on their end.
When he told her this the woman freaked the hell out, “Listen here you *&^% BEANER, for the amount of money I am paying your company you better *&^% fix this problem !”
He’s been in Arizona for nearly a year and has learned that to the majority of natives here it doesn’t matter where a Hispanic / Latino person or a descendant of is actually from, to them we’re all Mexicans.
“M’am,” he blurted out , ” I am not Mexican.”
“Well what the *&^% are you ?!” she yelled at him.
” I’m Puerto Rican m’am.”
That seemed to stop her cold. The line got so quiet you could hear the hamster wheel in her brain spinning trying to think of what to call him. He figured since she was on her computer that she must have Googled it because it took her a good minute before she came back with, ” Listen here you SPIC…”
He laughed and interrupted her rant and said, “Ah yes, there you go that’s much better ! THAT’s the right one! If you’re going to insult me you might as well get it right.” He still couldn’t fix her problem but at least he got a laugh out of it.
